  15. METZ FREEMEM OVERVIEW
  16.  
  17.      METZ FreeMem is a Microsoft Windows 3.0 utility which monitors and
  18. displays the percentage of free system resources and the amount of
  19. free memory available.  With METZ FreeMem you can monitor your Windows
  20. memory usage and avoid "Out of memory" messages.
  21.  
  22. MEMORY, RESOURCES, WINDOWS, AND YOU
  23.  
  24.      In the Microsoft Windows environment, there is both real and
  25. virtual memory.  Real memory is the base memory of up to 640K
  26. (655,360 bytes).  Virtual memory is a combination of extended memory
  27. and the memory which is swapped to disk by Windows.  You can increase
  28. virtual memory by increasing the amount of extended memory you have
  29. and/or by increasing the size of your Windows swapfile.  (See the
  30. Microsoft Windows User's Guide for more information on using swapfiles.)
  31.  
  32.     Because memory prices are now quite low, it is a good idea to
  33. install at least 4MB of memory on your system.  If you typically use
  34. several large applications simultaneously, you may want to add even
  35. more memory.
  36.  
  37.     Windows applications also use system resources.  The memory available
  38. for system resources consist of two 64K pools, one for the User Interface,
  39. the other for the Graphics Device Interface, for a total of 128K memory.
  40. Windows has a limitation on the amount of system resources available, and
  41. when several applications are loaded, you may reach this system resource
  42. usage limit.  You may see an "Out of memory" error message when this
  43. occurs.  Because the amount of memory available for system resources is
  44. limited, you will usually run out of system resources before running out
  45. of memory.
  46.  
  47. USING METZ FREEMEM
  48.  
  49.      METZ FreeMem displays the amount of free memory on the right side of
  50. its application window.  FreeMem displays the percentage of free system
  51. resources on the left portion of its window.
  52.  
  53.     To test system resource and memory usage for a specific Windows
  54. application:
  55.  
  56.     1.  Set up METZ FreeMem to check memory and to compact memory every
  57.         1 second.
  58.     2.  Close any applications you are not using.
  59.     3.  Note the percentage of resources and amount of memory free
  60.         displayed by METZ FreeMem.
  61.     4.  Run the application you want to test.
  62.     5.  Note the change in resources and free memory displayed by
  63.         by METZ FreeMem.
  64.     6.  Close the application you are testing.
  65.     7.  Finally, check to see if the resource and free memory displayed
  66.         by METZ FreeMem have returned to the same levels they were at
  67.         before you ran the application.
  68.  
  69.      This procedure will reveal the following information about the
  70. application you are testing:
  71.  
  72.     1.  Whether the application is using an extraordinary amount of
  73.         system resources and/or memory.
  74.     2.  Whether it is "cleaning up" used memory efficiently.  The
  75.         levels of available system resources and free memory should
  76.         return to the same level they were at before you ran the
  77.         application.
  78.  
  79.       We ran a simple test comparing different applications and observed
  80. the following:
  81.

  90.     These values may vary from system to system depending on individual
  91. configurations.
  92.  
  93.    NOTE:  The percentage of available system resources displayed by
  94. METZ FreeMem may vary slightly from that of the Program Manager.
  95. METZ FreeMem calculates memory more precisely because it takes into
  96. account even the smallest blocks of free memory available for system
  97. resources.
  98.  
  99. CONFIGURATION OPTIONS
  100.  
  101. For normal use with Windows, set your METZ FreeMem options as follows:
  102.  
  103.         1.  Configure METZ FreeMem to check memory every 3 to 5 seconds.
  104.         2.  Disable the Compact Memory option.
  105.  
  106. Here is a list of available METZ FreeMem Configuration options:
  107.  
  108. Check memory every ## seconds
  109.    METZ FreeMem will calculate the amount of memory available every ##
  110.    seconds.
  111.  
  112. Compact memory every ## seconds:
  113.    METZ FreeMem will tell Windows to compact memory every ## seconds.
  114.    This is useful when you wish to see how much memory a particular
  115.    application requires.  Check the amount of memory displayed before
  116.    and after an application is run to see how much memory it consumes.
  117.    When Windows compacts memory, is frees up blocks of memory no longer
  118.    being used by an application.  These blocks are kept in memory for
  119.    performance reasons.  The Compact option may decrease your system
  120.    performance, although some users have reported better system
  121.    performance with the Compact option enabled.
  122.  
  123. Invert Window:
  124.    Choose Invert Window to display white text on a black background.
  125.    You may prefer to use the Invert Window, if you have a black desktop
  126.    or if you are using a Screen Saver.
  127.  
  128. Stay in front:
  129.    Select this option if you want METZ FreeMem to always be visible and
  130.    displayed in front of any other application.
  131.  
  132. USING METZ FREEMEM WITH A MOUSE
  133.  
  134. You can move METZ FreeMem on the screen by pressing down on the left mouse
  135. button and dragging it to the location you want.  Use the right mouse
  136. button to close METZ FreeMem.  Double-click on the METZ FreeMem window
  137. to display the About box containing configuration options.
  138.  
  139. USING METZ FREEMEM WITHOUT A MOUSE
  140.  
  141. You can use the following keyboard actions with METZ FreeMEM
  142.  
  143.     ALT+TAB   Shifts the focus between windows.  (Because METZ FreeMem has
  144.               no caption bar, it is difficult to tell if it does have
  145.               the focus.  See the Microsoft Windows Users Guide for more
  146.               information.)
  147.     F1        Displays the About box which contains the configuration
  148.               options.
  149.     ALT+F7    Allows you to move METZ FreeMem with the ARROW keys.  Press
  150.               ENTER when you are finished moving METZ FreeMem.
  151.     ALT+F4    Closes METZ FreeMem.

  153. APPLICATION NOTES
  154.  
  155.      If EMS is detected, the amount free is displayed along with
  156. conventional free memory.  A plus sign separates conventional memory from
  157. expanded memory.  Expanded memory is displayed on the right.  Because
  158. Windows does not recognize expanded memory in Enhanced mode, this value
  159. will never be displayed.
  160.  
  161.      Use the left mouse button to move METZ FreeMem to whatever location
  162. you want on your screen.  This position will be stored in the current
  163. FREEMEM.INI for subsequent sessions.  The default startup position is
  164. the upper left corner of your screen.  You can add METZ FreeMem to the
  165. LOAD or RUN line in your WIN.INI file so that is run automatically during
  166. every Windows session. METZ FreeMem will stay in front of other windows
  167. so that it is always visible, unless you uncheck the Stay in front option.
  168. This makes it easy to observe memory management problems with the Windows
  169. applications you use.

  187. METZ File F/X
  188.      METZ File F/X incorporates two METZ shareware applications,
  189. Desktop Navigator and METZ Task Manager--and adds three new powerful
  190. utilities, F/X Text Search, F/X File Find, and F/X Undelete.  We've
  191. drawn upon the many suggestions of our users to dramatically redesign
  192. and enhance this unique file and application management utility package.

  208.      METZ Lock is a Microsoft Windows application that safeguards your
  209. system from unauthorized use.  Flexible security options allow you to
  210. "lock" your system "on-demand," whenever it is left idle, or according
  211. to a schedule.  Restrict mouse activity, disable rebooting, or enable
  212. the Screen Saver without locking the system.  User-definable hotkeys
  213. and a customizable Screen Saver let you tailor it to your own security
  214. needs.  It even works with your password-protected Novell network.

  216. METZ Lock 3.1 TEN PACK
  217.      A special METZ Lock 3.1 package that contains one User Guide and
  218. one program disk, but allows you to license ten copies of METZ Lock 3.1
